'Mitsch Mini' Mugo Pine

Species - 'Pinus mugo'

Are you looking for a genuinely distinctive tiny Bonsai tree? Are you interested in dabbling in pine Bonsai trees, but you are concerned about the level of care that most pines require?

Then the Dwarf Mugo Pine might be perfect for you, or for a Bonsai-lover in your life.

Originally native to the mountains of central and southern Europe, the Mugo Pine has been traded commercially since the 19th Century. Due to its hardiness, it has become popular in a wide variety of areas and is now considered a great Bonsai tree as well.

Meet Your Dwarf Mugo Pine Bonsai

Like most pines, it is covered by a thick canopy of dark green needles which always look gorgeous, any time of year. While it can be trimmed and trained, this is often unnecessary. It limits its own needle growth, and always grows into a slightly irregular bush form. This is one reason it is good for Bonsai newcomers, or those that do not want to put in a lot of time doing maintenance.

Also, even by Bonsai standards, a Dwarf Mugo Pine is a small tree. So, it is great for space-conscious growers. Left in a pot, it will not grow more than a foot tall, and if you plant it in your garden, it is still unlikely to grow larger than three feet or so. In many cases, Dwarf Mugo Pine Bonsai growers choose to put their Mugo in the ground after a few years, and let it become part of their garden. Despite its European origins, it fits in remarkably well with Asian-themed gardens, and almost any other style too.

On top of that, it is a very hardy species. It can survive virtually any winter - potentially down to -50°F - and it is also drought-tolerant. In fact, the Mugo Pine prefers dry soil, so do not expect to water it often. Over-watering is one of the few things you can do that might kill it.

One other thing to keep in mind: like many pines, the Dwarf Mugo has a symbiotic relationship with a particular type of fungus that grows in its root ball. It needs this fungus to live! So, if you see white web-like strands in your Mugo's roots, that is entirely normal, and they should be preserved as much as possible when you repot it.

Otherwise, the Dwarf Mugo Pine will typically thrive even if it is neglected. If you occasionally water it, and do not let it roast in the summer, you should have a gorgeous little tree that is ready to become a fixture of your garden if you ever want to move it outdoors.
